A feretory is “an ornate often portable bier for the relics of a saint.” In other words, a storehouse for saintly relics-a literal Gate of Babylon. The official English translation (and what I will continue using, for consistency’s sake) is Malevolent Shrine, but the literal translation is Demon Feretory. Sukuna’s domain expansion is Fukuma Mizushi (伏魔御厨子). Whatever the square denotes, Sukuna is effectively unlocking a repository of techniques that could have been his before becoming acclaimed as another’s specialty. In short, Gilgamesh is the predecessor of all heroic spirits and the Gate of Babylon is the treasury from which all heroic spirits inherit their sacred weapons.įor anyone familiar with Fate’s Gilgamesh, the personality similarities should be exceedingly obvious, but there have been instances where Sukuna has shown himself capable of an ability seemingly belonging to another, similar to how all heroic treasure was, at some point, first in Gilgamesh’s possession.īefore revealing his flame manipulation ability, Sukuna chants:
Unless originally possessed by Gilgamesh, these splendid weapons could not be inherited by heroes later derived from his legend. His Noble Phantasm, the Gate of Babylon, is a repository of every object constructed by humanity the tools of all heroic spirits originated as prototypes from Gilgamesh’s personal treasury. In the Fate universe, Gilgamesh is renowned as the King of Heroes from whom heroes of various mythology are born and to whom all worldly possession belongs. (If anyone were arrogant and obstinate enough to become an actor in natural selection, it would be Sukuna, right? Nothing but respect for my King of Curses).
Given the expanse of Sukuna’s influence both in-life as an undefeatable sorcerer and posthumously as the ultimate cursed spirit, he could have cultivated the genetic landscape for “super big-time sorcerer” like Sugawara no Michizane to be born, or the enormity of the cursed energy emanating from his remains could have incited the ideal conditions for such jujutsu sorcerers to arise. Assuming the Three Great Vengeful Spirits in the Jujutsu world arrive following the same chronology, Jujutsu-Sukuna also predated the Three Great Families.įurthermore, this is suggested by Sukuna’s failure to immediately recognize the Ten Shadows Cursed Technique-prized inheritance of the Zen’in clan-when fighting against Megumi in the Cursed Womb arc.
In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, Ryōmen-Sukuna reaped havoc for sorcerer and non-sorcerer alike approximately one thousand years ago, and his real-life historical counterpart was a legendary presence in the Hida Province during the late fourth century, according to the Nihon shoki. These scriptures were rejected, however, feared to be cursed. After his abdication, he adopted a monastic lifestyle and offered numerous scriptures to the Imperial Court. In some circles, Masakado represents the origin of the samurai.Įmperor Sutoku (崇徳天皇) is the third of the vengeful spirits in and lived between 11 and was the seventy-fifth Japanese Emperor. Earning himself reputation as an enemy of the Imperial Court, Masakado enthroned himself as an emperor and aimed to establish independence from the centralized government his rebellion, however, was ultimately extinguished. Living between 903 and 940, he was a samurai during the Heian period who championed one of the largest insurrections against the Kyoto government. Taira no Masakado (平将門) is the second of the three great vengeful spirits in Japanese mythology.

Neglected and banished, he was posthumously deified as Tenjin-patron of scholarship and literature-after a series of calamities were attributed to acts of vengenance against his political rivals. Sugawara no Michizane (菅原道真) was a scholar, poet and Japanese court administrator during the Heian Period. The confirmed predecessor of the Gojō family lived between 845 and 903. It is speculated each of these three families desecend from the Nihon San Dai Onryō-the Three Great Onryō (Vengeful Spirits) of Japan: Sugawara no Michizane, Taira no Masakado and Emperor Sutoku.
